Look for a description of the class, social dancing or club program. Ask whether instruction is included and which level the lesson is intended for. Confirm whether you need to bring a partner and when the teaching starts. An event named for salsa or bachata may offer social dancing without a lesson, so read the actual schedule.

Ask whether someone would like to dance and accept a decline. During a dance, check that the hold and movements feel comfortable for both of you. Each partner can pause or end the dance. Adapt movements to the space available and watch for nearby dancers.
If you want instruction, ask the teacher or attend the class. A social partner may want to keep dancing. Let them choose how much help they want to give. You can also listen to the music and watch from a place that keeps the dance floor clear.
